How were disposable gloves born?
Jul 16,2025
In industries with high glove replacement frequency, it is usually recommended to use disposable gloves. This not only avoids cross infection, but also greatly saves replacement costs, such as the medical industry, laboratory, food processing industry and other industries with high hygiene requirements. So how were disposable gloves produced?
1、 The origin and development of gloves:
First came gloves, then disposable gloves. The historical record of people using gloves can be traced back to the Homeric epic in the 6th century BC, which depicts a scene where people eat with their hands. Differently, they wear special gloves before eating and then grab the food to avoid direct contact between their hands and the food.
For the early use of gloves, compared to practicality, gloves were widely used as decorations. Silk gloves were unearthed from the Mawangdui Han Tomb in China. In Western history, gloves have a dual meaning of solemnity and sacredness in addition to decoration.
With the passage of time, various gloves have emerged based on their different uses and materials.
Early rubber gloves can be traced back to the 19th century. Due to limited technology, the rubber gloves produced are difficult to withstand high temperatures. With the arrival of the first industrial revolution, many technological difficulties were overcome. Natural latex was not widely used until the birth of the first pair of latex gloves in 1889. Later, with the booming development of the manufacturing industry, disposable gloves began to be widely used in industries with high glove replacement frequency, such as the electronics industry, medical industry, etc.
2、 What are the materials of disposable gloves?
Disposable gloves can be divided into disposable plastic gloves, disposable latex gloves, and disposable nitrile rubber gloves according to their materials.Although it is inexpensive and widely used, the material is non degradable, which is not conducive to environmental protection, and due to the performance limitations of the product itself, it can only be used in non professional fields. In professional fields such as industrial manufacturing, latex disposable gloves and nitrile disposable gloves are mainstream.
Latex disposable gloves are made of high-quality natural latex, which has the advantages of excellent elasticity and anti slip performance, and can be considered as cost-effective. Moreover, natural latex is biodegradable and more environmentally friendly. However, the only downside is that disposable latex gloves are not anti-static and their use is limited in some industries that are sensitive to static electricity. Moreover, according to surveys, 2% to 17% of people have varying degrees of allergies to latex.
Nitrile disposable gloves, as a type of synthetic rubber glove, were born nearly a century later than latex gloves and gradually became widely used until 1991. Nitrile gloves can be said to be an upgraded version of latex gloves, inheriting almost all the advantages of latex gloves. Although slightly inferior in elasticity to latex materials, it overcomes the disadvantages of latex gloves such as susceptibility to sensitization and lack of anti-static properties.
